Early...Early...Match Box...from an Amana, Iowa Home...

I was drawn to this wonderful earthenware box immediately... I felt, it was incredibly old... then, when I opened it, to find a striker, completely worn through... I had mixed emotions... Yes...it had been used and used... but...it was a match box... how old could it be? Matches haven't been around that long...I thought...maybe a little over a hundred years...I really thought the little box, was much older... I bought it, anyway... It just had the most wonderful feel...I put it on the old cupboard... and enjoyed it's charm...{I can't begin to imagine, how many matches it took, to wear a hole in the lid... but it didn't stop there... they kept using it....oh my...}... then, when I was dusting it, the other day... I thought I would just see, how long stick matches have been around... and did a little research...
A man named, John Walker on April 7th, 1827...sold the first stick matches....
I was surprised, by that... but...it makes sense... I felt the box was no later than the mid 1800's, when I first held it....and now, I think I am pretty close...
You learn something new, about this old stuff...everyday....
We are all hunkered down... we are supposed to get around 17 inches of Snow.... and the wind chill, way below zero....
Oh My...
Have a Warm Day...

Love the matchbox. Now I've learned something new too. I really thought matches were older then that. We're having the extremely cold temps too & everything around here is closed -- including Leola's. Stay warm! Jan

Hey Jan...
They have been around longer.... just not mass produced... so, no need for a little box, with a stricker...
